Think Flyer Enterprises is just about coffee? Think again! At UD, students go beyond lattes, gaining real-world experience in Analytics, HR, App Development, Design, Marketing, Supply Chain & Operations. Leadership isn’t brewed overnight—it’s built!

Beyond the Barista

When people think of Flyer Enterprises (FE), the first image that often comes to mind is a busy barista crafting lattes or serving up a quick bite between classes. And while FE’s coffee and food divisions are its most visible, the opportunities within this student-run business go far beyond coffee cups and cash registers.

With over 200 student employees and millions in annual revenue, Flyer Enterprises is one of the nation’s largest student-run businesses. What began in 1990 as Rudy’s Fly-Buy, a small convenience store in UD’s student neighborhood, has grown into an organization spanning 13 divisions, offering positions from Sales Associate to CEO. More than just fueling campus with coffee and food, FE operates as a thriving, diverse business that fosters professional growth. Through hands-on leadership, problem-solving, and innovation, students gain unparalleled experiential learning in business operations, analytics, marketing, human resources, and technology. By taking ownership of real-world business challenges, they develop accountability, customer service expertise, and strategic decision-making skills. As FE continues to evolve—introducing new divisions and adapting to changing campus needs—it remains committed to its core mission: empowering students to lead.

Connor Keefe (accounting and finance ‘25) who began his journey at Flyer Enterprises as a Sales Associate at Stu's Landing, is the incoming CEO after holding various General Manager and Director roles. Keefe believes that his experience across multiple positions and divisions has given him a unique advantage in understanding FE as a whole. "I would definitely say I’ve gained a unique perspective on FE and what it takes to run a business," he shared. "Through these various roles, I have been exposed to purchasing and ordering, operations, human resources, marketing, and different forms and levels of leadership."

From sales associates to executive board members, every student within FE plays a role in shaping its success. Here’s a look at a few leaders who are making an impact beyond the barista stand.

Kyle Stross – From Data Analytics to Decision-Making

Senior Management Information Systems major Kyle Stross exemplifies the diverse opportunities available in FE. As the Manager of the Data Analytics team in the FEIT division and a Sales Associate at Art Street Café, Kyle has experienced both the customer-facing and behind-the-scenes operations of FE.

As Data Analytics Manager, he leads a team that creates customized reports for FE’s divisions, helping them track performance, optimize operations, and make data-driven decisions. One of his most impactful projects involved collecting and analyzing survey data for a potential Fly By renovation, ultimately shaping a presentation that influenced future improvements.

Through coursework in Statistics, Organizational Behavior, and Database Management, Kyle has been able to apply his academic knowledge directly to his role, preparing him for a future in analytics and business strategy.

Jessica First – Elevating E-Commerce & Creativity

As the incoming President of E-Commerce and former Operations Manager of FE Creative, a division which creates creative and digital solutions for external clients Jessica First (graphic design ‘27) is no stranger to leadership and innovation. She now oversees Rudy’s Runway and FE Creative, blending e-commerce management with creative content development.

Jessica began her FE journey as a Sales Associate at Brown Street Bistro, where she honed her teamwork skills. Encouraged by supportive management, she pursued leadership opportunities, eventually becoming Operations Manager for FE Creative. In this role, she led client communications, coordinated photo shoots, and managed content creation, all while fostering a collaborative team environment.

Currently, she and her team at FE Creative are working with The National Neutropenia Network, managing their social media and preparing to provide AV support, photography, and videography at an upcoming conference. Her hands-on experience at FE has been instrumental in developing her leadership, marketing, and creative strategy skills.

Daniel Frederick – Engineering Innovation in FEIT

Daniel Frederick (computer science ‘26), a Software Developer for FE, demonstrates how Flyer Enterprises isn’t just for business majors. His technical role allows him to collaborate with like-minded peers, work on cutting-edge projects, and gain hands-on experience in software engineering.

Daniel has played a key role in implementing loyalty cards across FE and is currently helping develop a mobile ordering system. With FE’s IT division undergoing a transition under new CIO, Daniel and his team are shifting focus to AI-driven initiatives, showcasing how FE continues to push the boundaries of student-led innovation.

Through his work, Daniel has discovered the importance of communication—regularly engaging with his team and CIO to ensure smooth project execution. His FE experience has not only strengthened his technical expertise but has also prepared him for leadership roles in the tech industry.

Brian Philibin – Leading HR at First Class Flyers

For Brian Philibin (finance and management ‘25), FE has been about more than just developing business skills—it’s been about building relationships and fostering professional growth. As the Director of Human Resources for First Class Flyers, Brian manages staffing for UD Arena’s Flight Deck and Boesch venues, ensuring smooth operations for home Men’s Basketball games.

His journey began at Stuart’s Landing, where he developed a passion for working with people. Now, as Director of HR, he plays a crucial role in scheduling, overseeing roles, maintaining communication with UD Dining Services, and approving timesheets. His coursework in Managerial Skills, Organizational Behavior, and Managing the Enterprise has been instrumental in shaping his leadership style.

Megan Taylor – Designing Success at Rudy’s Runway

Megan Taylor’s (marketing ‘25)  journey within FE started at Fly By, but her passion for creativity led her to become the Director of Marketing for Rudy’s Runway. While both roles are vastly different, she enjoys the unique challenges each presents.

At Rudy’s Runway, Megan is responsible for managing the brand’s Instagram, planning photoshoots, organizing pop-up events, and assisting in merchandise design. Her ability to blend marketing strategy with creative execution has helped elevate the brand’s presence on campus.

Marketing 103 provided her with the foundation to transition seamlessly into this role, and has gained valuable insights into brand management, outreach, and consumer engagement.

More Than a Job—A Launchpad for the Future

Flyer Enterprises isn’t just a workplace; it’s a launching pad for students’ careers. Whether developing data-driven strategies, leading marketing campaigns, managing HR operations, or pioneering software solutions, FE provides an immersive business experience that prepares students for the professional world.

Leadership at FE isn’t brewed overnight—it’s built through hands-on experience, innovation, and a commitment to excellence. So, the next time you grab your coffee from Heritage or order a sandwich from Fly By, remember: Flyer Enterprises is much more than coffee. It’s where future business leaders, analysts, marketers, and entrepreneurs take flight.
